but where’s the student union?

The other day I was reading an article about the best public universities. Sad to say my alma mater, UMass, did not make the cut. (I’m going to assume it’s because the other schools have excellent financial aid.) Then I started thinking about how higher ed has changed. When I was in college, there was no such thing as an online university. The Web was just a baby as far as most people were concerned. These days, you can get an online MBA, though. I imagine you have to be cautious. Imagine forking over tuition only to have given it to a fake school. I recently learned about a school called Western Governors University that is fully-accredited and non-profit. The tuition is flat-rate and not by the number of credits you carry, which is interesting. And while the students won’t be meeting their study partners at the coffee shop or library, WGU hooks them up with mentors to advise them while they work toward their degree. Man, it’s a different world, isn’t it?
