About

Hi. My name is Carol and I’m addicted to blogging.

I’ve been writing online since 1999. My first online journal was hosted at Crosswinds and titled “Inner Architecture.” It was pulled from an Italo Calvino quote:

“A person’s life consists of a collection of events, the last of which could also change the meaning of the whole, not because it counts more than the previous ones but because once they are included in a life, events are arranged in an order that is not chronological but, rather, corresponds to an inner architecture.”

In May 2000 I gave up the traditional online journal format and started this weblog. The title, “Pure Sugar,” doesn’t come from anything nearly as philosophical. Honestly? I was looking at a sugar packet when I was trying to decide on a domain name.

I used to wonder how long I’d keep my blog up and running; the 25 year old me would be stunned to know that 10 years later, I’m still at it.

I’m married to my best friend. I know that sounds incredibly cliche, but it’s true. Drew and I have three children (two boys and our girl). Our little family lives in New York’s Hudson Valley region. I love writing about area restaurants and attractions, and I’m always on the lookout for something new to check out. I’m originally from western Massachusetts (which Baystaters know must always be distinguished from the rest of the state), but NY has been my home since December 1999.

In 1997 I graduated from UMass Amherst with a degree in journalism. I minored in economics. Prior to my life as a mom, I was an editor in various capacities at a news wire and a magazine. I owned a wine shop for two and a half years. We sold it in June 2008, but it was a great experience. These days I work as a freelance writer. Life is good!

I love olives, literary fiction, 90s indie rock, and gritty crime dramas.

I can’t stand reality television, bad drivers, and dogs. I’m not really an animal person at all, actually.

I have a lot of different interests and I write about them all, from crochet to canning, and from wine to wildflowers. I’m so glad you stopped by!

Thanks for reading —
Carol
