School Daze
The meeting last night wasn't too bad. As with anything, there are always a few people you can tell are just... well, nasty. One in particular really had an attitude, especially when I mentioned that the reason Jake probably won't be there for the full year is that we are moving back to Westchester. Immediately she got snotty, "Wow... Westchester, huh? Yeah, big difference between down there and up here." Drew said that I should have responded by saying, "Yeah, you know the people down there are so much nicer!" Instead I just smiled and said, "Yes there is." Just because we're moving back down there doesn't mean we're made out of money because we very obviously are not, however, a lot of people tend to stereotype Westchester as being very affluent. To a certain extent it's true, but there are plenty of regular folks as well.
Anyway. I also felt like the teen mom in the group. There were a couple dozen parents there, and maybe only 2 or 3 were in my immediate age bracket. Everyone else seemed to be at least 10 years older than me. So I paid the first and last month's tuition, volunteered to bake cookies for Community Day (which we can't attend because we'll be out of town - the nasty lady rolled her eyes when I told her that; she can bite me), and got the calendar for the school year. Jake's first day of nursery school is September 11th, and the day before they have a half-hour ice cream social at the school so parents can meet the teachers, other parents, other children, etc. We all were also briefed on the incredibly complex drop-off/pick-up rules. I think I have it down, but good grief... The school has a teeny-tiny parking lot, so there's the drop-off spot (where you wait in the car until one of the teachers comes out to get your child), the "staging area" where two cars can wait, and then (this is the crazy confusing part), if all three positions are full, you need to pull into the restaurant parking lot across the street, where there is kind of a jug handle, and wait there until a spot clears. Whew... I think you need a Master's Degree just to figure out how to drop your kid off at school! No, actually I think it's easy when you're doing it, but the instructions are rather complex.
He doesn't really need any school supplies aside from a backpack big enough to hold papers, so we'll go shopping for that. He's very excited to go. I just hope he is this excited on his first day!
Random note: Kerry and Catherine -- I'm mailing out your boxes on Friday.
And I can't believe that my little little guy is going to be one tomorrow. ::sniff, sniff::
